SIAT Undergrad Studios

The steady growth of the SIAT program has led to the creation of the Undergraduate Studios which provide more space for students to work on team projects. Here, students are encouraged to be an active part of the studio community. We believe that collaborating with others and being aware of fellow students’ projects are important to students in the SIAT program, and these new Studios are meant to facilitate that. These spaces have been fully dedicated to SIAT undergraduates, and within them, students have the opportunity to govern themselves and exercise the responsibility that comes with using an open and shared academic studio. The two studios have both bookable and non-bookable areas, team rooms for more private work, open space that is more public and white boards.

The Studio Space is currently accessible for all SIAT undergraduate students; but team space is only bookable for SIAT undergraduate students registered in certain courses. For each semester, course numbers will be posted on the website at:

http://www.siat.sfu.ca/ undergrad/studios/

Fall Semester 2009, courses eligible for booking team space are:

IAT 222, IAT 233, IAT 267, IAT 333, IAT 336, IAT 338, IAT 402, IAT 403

The Studio Spaces’ Role

The Undergraduate Studio Spaces are geared towards Fabrication and Discussion type work, and these activities are given priority within the space.

• The Studio is a shared space with bookable and non-bookable pods. More private team work should take place in the bookable rooms found in the Library and Galleria.
• Various media work stations are available in other spaces on campus.
• Activities requiring supervision such as power tool usage or dangerous chemicals should only take place in Solid Space.
• Additional workspace is available in classroom 3350 which is generally booked for SIAT in the evenings. For each semester’s Open Lab schedule, please check on the door of room 3350.
